MAGLIANO IN TUSCANY

There are few villages in Maremma with an interesting history like that of Magliano in Toscana. The town is surrounded by archaeological sites and necropolises that tell of an ancient past, from the Iron Age to the Roman Empire. The first settlements around Magliano in Toscana date back to the 6th century BC.

The village of Pitigliano has medieval origins, it was founded by the Aldobraneeschi in the 11th century, who built the fortress and a curtain wall.

Unlike the other villages in the Maremma, Magliano in Toscana is completely surrounded by its ancient city walls, which have survived almost intact today. The city walls were built by the Aldobrandeschi and restored by the Sienese during the 15th century.

Imposing and evocative, the city walls of Magliano in Toscana are one of its most particular and important elements, helping to make the city unique in its kind.

If you are a lover of good wine, you cannot leave Magliano in Toscana without having tasted, and perhaps purchased, its typical products, such as Morellino di Scansano, to which a “Vinellando” festival is also dedicated at the end of August.

TO BE SEEN

The tour of Magliano in Toscana starts from its walls, whose medieval roots have been carefully and faithfully preserved by the Sienese from 1358 onwards.
Follow Corso Garibaldi, the main street of Magliano, up to Porta di San Martino to enjoy a spectacular view of the countryside.
In October you can sit here and watch the farmers pick the olives by hand.
The Church of San Martino, in the nearby square, has outside a flower bed with rosemary bushes, used by housewives as well as by the cooks of the local restaurants.
The church dating back to the 11th century has a modest Romanesque design and was built with blocks of local travertine.
In the light, the facade appears to be a faded grey, but is actually a mix of pastel blue, brown and pink.
Inside on the right side of the presbytery, there is a framed painting of St. William of Aquitaine and St. Catherine of Alexandria.
Up close you can see traces of an older work, on which the unknown artist painted in the 16th century.
Continue along Corso Garibaldi towards Piazza della Repubblica, where the new Magliano meets the old.
This is the square where the summer parties are held and it is perfect for spending a siesta exchanging digestive tips.
The Church of San Giovanni Battista is in the center of the square, where its façade, restored in 1471 in the Sienese style, stands out.
Inside, the imposing paintings are overwhelmed by the stucco statues of St. John the Baptist and St. Andrew the Apostle, so white that they glow in the dark.
The travertine baptismal font, exquisitely carved with Renaissance motifs, dates back to 1493.
The last stop of your walk is the palace of Checco il Bello. It was once the country home of the powerful 14th-century Monaldeschi family from Orvieto, but the building takes its name from a 20th-century inhabitant, Francesco Salvi, so nicknamed.
Next door, the Archaeological Documentation Center (15 June – 15 September: 4pm-8pm; 0564 593056; free) has a small collection of Roman coins, bronze statuettes, lead ingots and Etruscan ceramics, found during excavations local archaeologists.
