Medieval walls

The crumbling medieval walls that once kept enemies away from Scarlino were built during the 11th century.

Centuries later they were rebuilt by the Aldobrandeschi family, who kept them in good condition until they, along with the city, passed into the hands of the Municipality of Pisa.

Two gates-the Porta Pisana and Porta Senese-were the only access roads to the medieval city and are now the best-preserved parts of the walls.
