Vulci Spa
On the border with Tuscany, in the heart of the Tuscan-Lazio Maremma, the Terme di Vulci is a recently opened spa complex, in the municipality of Canino, a few minutes from the Archaeological Park of Vulci.
Immersed in the countryside of Tuscia Laziale, surrounded by woods, cultivated fields and rolling hills, the Terme di Vulci are a delightful little oasis of well-being. The project is very ambitious, with the intention of creating a large thermal park with a spa wellness area, swimming pools and hotel. The thermal baths currently consist of 4 swimming pools, one of which is of ferrous spring water at 42°C, and the other three at gradually colder temperatures, for a course of reactivation of the circulation and toning of the body, and a refreshment point which offers excellent dishes for a quick lunch. Also available to guests are changing rooms with toilets and showers, sunbeds and umbrellas.
History of the thermal waters of Vulci
The Etruscans were the first to discover the incredible beneficial properties of the thermal waters of Vulci. Already in the 3rd century BC, in the midst of the imperial age, the Romans created the first thermal baths called “Tubs of the Center Chambers”, composed of a series of baths that included a Calidarium, a Tiepidarium, an Iaconium and a Frigidarium, in the center there was an eight-shaped natium. Some archaeological excavations have also uncovered the remains of private baths inside a Roman villa. These waters continued to be at the center of attention from important historical figures even in the following centuries; in fact, there was another small spa centre, the “Casale del Bagno”, built by Luciano Bonaparte, brother of the more famous Napoleon, and made up of a large rectangular tub fed directly by spring thermal waters.
Properties of thermal waters
The thermal water of Vulci is classified as bicarbonate, sulphate, calcium, magnesium, fluoride, acidulous and ferruginous, microbiologically pure and naturally carbonated. Due to its properties, the Vulci water is recommended for balneo-mud therapy for the treatment of arthro-rheumatic diseases, and for balneo-therapy for dermatological diseases and phlebopathies.
The spa
The spa consists of 3 swimming pools, two with thermal water and a sports pool. In the two thermal pools, the water slowly drops in temperature, creating a natural effect of reactivation of the circulation and toning the body. In the first pool the water is at 42°C, bathing is recommended for a period of no more than 20 minutes, in the next the water is cooler and more transparent, with a temperature of 38°C, this difference in temperatures and appearance of the water is due to the different extraction depths, but in both cases it is pure hyperthermal water. The last pool hosts a small island in the center with three large olive trees, symbolizing the profound connection between these spas and the Tuscia area.
