The Argentario Panoramic Road
Monte Argentario, with its Panoramic Road, is a hidden jewel in the Tuscan Maremma, where the majesty of nature blends with the richness of history. This route, which connects Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano, offers a breathtaking view of the coast and the sea, making it an unforgettable experience for every visitor.
The unparalleled charm of the Monte Argentario Panoramic Road
The Strada Panoramica of Porto Santo Stefano winds along the Argentario coast, offering spectacular views of the open sea. Traveling along it is a unique experience: not only can you enjoy a breathtaking panorama, but you can also observe the ruins of numerous coastal towers. Among these, the Lividonia Tower, built in the 16th century, the Cacciarella Tower, the Cala Grande Tower, now part of a private residence, the Cala Moresca Tower, overlooking the islet of Argentarola, and the Cala Tower Piatti, now integrated into the Cala Piccola Hotel.
Exploration of the Ancient Coastal Towers
Continuing along the panoramic road towards Porto Ercole, a breathtaking panorama opens up over the gulf below, with the island of Giannutri easily visible. From here, you can take a walking path that leads towards the sea, and continue up to the ruins on the top of the adjacent hill. Here is the Capo d’Omo tower, which once collected the signals from the towers on the south-western coast of the promontory to transmit them to Porto S. Stefano. Despite being damaged, the tower still dominates the bay below from a 358m precipice that plunges into the sea. The view from here is simply extraordinary! Returning to the road accessible by car, we continue towards Porto Ercole, where we come across the square tower of Maddalena, built during the Sienese domination and then strengthened by the Spanish. Continuing, you come across the hexagonal tower of the Cannelle, surrounded by walls, and the Ciana tower, more difficult to see from the road. At this point, the road becomes unpaved and uneven, making it impossible to continue by car. However, it is a great opportunity to stop and capture breathtaking views with your camera.
Attention, the road may be interrupted in some sections, so we recommend turning back if the road turns into a “gravel road”.
Port Santo Stefano
After exploring the wonders of the Strada Panoramica, it is necessary to return to Porto Santo Stefano. The town offers a variety of services, including hotels, holiday homes, bed & breakfasts, and nautical activities such as charters and diving centres. Furthermore, for those who wish to extend their stay in this corner of paradise, there are several real estate agencies available.
