The Piero Bonacina Garden is an art garden in Montegiovi, in the municipality of Castel del Piano.
The works in the artistic park are created by Piero himself who has used the most diverse materials over the years, from the sandstone of Manciano to the travertine of Saturnia, but also iron, wood and cement.

The history of the Garden

Piero Bonacina moved to Montegiovi from the province of Lecco in the early 1990s, following in the footsteps of the Tibetan master Namkhai Norbu who in 1981 opened the Merigar West dzog-chen center on Monte Amiata. Piero Bonacina in fact spent a good part of his life traveling in the East, especially in India. Arrived on Monte Amiata Piero, a self-taught sculptor, began to create his own works in the garden of his home, since 2009 his garden has become part of the Amiata Museum System, in the provincial network of Maremma museums.

The garden

Located in a panoramic position on the famous “Conca d’Oro”, the valley of the Zancona and Ente rivers, in the southern part of Montegiovi, the Piero Bonacina Garden is a wonderful art park immersed in the Maremma nature. Piero himself guides visitors to discover the garden and its wonders. Arranged in the large olive grove, the sculptures are made of various materials, local stones, iron and wood.
Many of the works on display celebrate great contemporary artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Constantin Brâncuși, Henry Moore and Marcel Duchamp.
Among the main works:
Chaos, a tangle of metal objects
Human Ambition, symbolized by a man who tramples on others in order to achieve his goals
Migrants fleeing in the Mediterranean
the Life of Man, depicting the three phases of life, child, adult and elderly
la Fatica, the concrete sculpture of a man bent over by work
the Man with Open Arms, a sculpture facing the valley and covered with ivy

The visit to the garden ends at the laboratory-atelier, where the works still under construction are located, as well as the artist’s home and some beautiful sculptures.
