Garden of Sounds by Paul Fuchs

In the Maremma countryside of Boccheggiano, a small fraction of Montieri, in the province of Grosseto, near Massa Marittima, is the Garden of Sounds by Paul Fuchs.

The garden is a work in progress of works and sculptures created since 1981, with particular attention to the balance between the materials used and the geometric and abstract shapes. All the structures blend perfectly into nature, their presence is almost imperceptible, imposing and slender they rise towards the sky for tens of metres, blending in with the trees. The works are made of iron, copper, bronze, stone or wood.

The history of the garden

The name “Garden of Sounds” derives from the sculptor’s first works, created in the 1980s with the particularity, when touched by the wind, of emitting more or less intense sounds.

The garden

Scattered throughout the 2 hectares of the park, the works of the brilliant sculpture artist Paul Fuchs are extraordinary, imposing but at the same time light and sinuous.

Among the most important works:

  • the Great Indicator, created in Berlin in 1996
  • the Wind Spiral, built in Memmingen in 2004
  • High B, made in Munich in 1995
  • Sign in the Wind, made in Moers in 2000
  • the Lens, created in Grimma in 2002

The itinerary ends at the House Museum where there is a collection of miniatures of the sculptures in the garden and where Paul Fuchs himself welcomes visitors by improvising melodies with a lithophone he created. The museum also houses a music room, with instruments made by the artist himself with different materials.
