grosseto-museum-archaeologicalThe Archaeological and Art Museum of Maremma

In 1860, a public library already existed in Grosseto which hosted an exhibition of finds from the collection donated by Giovanni Chelli.

Since then the museum has increased its importance by enriching itself with artifacts and treasures found in the nearby archaeological areas, today the museum is made up of over 40 rooms, and is located in the Palazzo del Vecchio Tribunal.

In the first rooms there is a collection of Etruscan urbe found in the nearby cities of Volterra and Chiusi, as well as ceramics from Orvieto and a 6th century bucchero decorated with alphabetic motifs.

Eleven sections are dedicated to the archaeological site of Roselle, an ancient Etruscan city founded at the end of the Iron Age. The objects exhibited in this section of the museum date back to a period from the foundation of the city up to the Augustan period, when Roselle was the capital of Etruscan colony in Tuscany.

On display are funerary objects, votive statues, wine barrels, stones with Latin engravings, Roman terracotta statues and various decorations, all dating from the 5th-3rd century BC.

On the second floor of the museum there is an exhibition of archaeological finds from various sites in the area.

Among the most interesting objects exhibited in the museum there is certainly a Euboic Createre from Pescia Romana and dated 730 BC, and an African wreck found in the depths of the Island of Giglio, near Giglio Porto – precious testimony of commercial activities in the Etruscan era.

Also of great interest are the documents that tell the culture, language, writing and funerary traditions of the Etruscans, and the important innovations brought by the Roman conquerors.

The last section of the museum, on the third floor, houses a collection of objects found in Grosseto and around the city, dating back to the Medieval and Renaissance periods.
