ORIGINS AND HISTORY

In the 13th century, in particular, Viterbo hosted the papal see for about 24 years, becoming an important center of power. During this period, many of the historic buildings that still characterize the city center, such as the Palace of the Popes and the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, were built.

Macchina di Santa Rosa: Every September 3, a tower about thirty meters high lights up the Viterbo night. It is a structure weighing about fifty quintals, lit by candles, that is carried on the shoulders of hundreds of pallbearers in honor of Saint Rose, the patron saint of the city.
Museums: Viterbo is home to several museums, including MuVi – Museums of Viterbo, which offers an overview of the city’s history and art.
HOW TO GET
Viterbo is easily accessible by both car and train. If traveling by car, the city is connected to the A1 highway, which links it to Rome and Florence. By train, Viterbo is served by the railway line that connects it to Rome and other cities in Lazio. Once there, the historic center is easy to explore on foot, thanks to its small size and numerous pedestrian areas.
