Piansano: A Dive into the History and Tradition of Tuscia
Piansano, located 40 km from Viterbo, is one of the most charming villages of Tuscia Viterbese. Nestled in a landscape of green pastures and cultivated fields, the village is a short distance from Lake Bolsena, offering a perfect mix of history, culture and natural beauty.
History of Piansano
The origins of Piansano are deeply rooted in time. Near the present settlement stood Maternum, an Etruscan-Roman town that existed for about nine centuries. With the fall of the Roman Empire, Maternum gave way to Plautianum, a medieval center that later took the name Pianzano.
The history of Piansano has been influenced by various dominations and noble families. In the Middle Ages, the village came under the control of the counts of Vetralla, the Bisenzo, the di Vico and finally the Farnese. The latter family destroyed the existing castle, leaving an indelible mark on the history of the village.
Over the centuries, Piansano has seen numerous changes in ownership, passing from the Church to various noble families, until it became part of the Duchy of Castro in 1537. After the destruction of Castro in 1649, the town returned under the control of the Church. In the 19th century, the territory of Piansano passed through several hands, including Count Alessandro Cardarelli, Polish Prince Stanislao Poniatowski, and Count Giuseppe Cini, before being acquired by Monte dei Paschi di Siena in 1897.
