Montalto di Castro

Montalto di Castro: An Enchantment Between Sea and History

Montalto di Castro, located just a few kilometers from the Tyrrhenian coast, is a village that stands on a broad tuffaceous outcrop near the Fiora River. Although it was initially a small agricultural center, it has evolved considerably over the past three decades, thanks to agriculture and summer tourism.

Marina of Montalto di Castro

A short distance from the historic center is Marina di Montalto di Castro, a tourist resort with wide sandy beaches and lush pine forests. This place is an ideal destination for those who want to spend a relaxing vacation by the sea.

The Historical Center

The beating heart of Montalto di Castro is its historic center, dominated by Guglielmi Castle. This imposing building, dating back to the 15th century, was commissioned by the Orsini family, as can be seen from an effigy on the main tower. Strolling through the streets of the village, one can admire various historical and cultural testimonies, including the Church of S. Maria Assunta, with its 18th-century façade, and the Town Hall, originally a convent transformed into a fortress by the Farnese family.

History of Montalto di Castro

Legend has it that Montalto was founded in the 5th century AD by the inhabitants of a coastal town who took refuge on the high ground to escape raids by Saracen pirates. However, the first written mention of Montalto dates back to 853 AD, in a papal bull addressed to the bishop of Tuscania, where the name “Montis Alti” appears. Over the centuries, Montalto underwent several dominations, passing from the hands of the Vico family to the Orsini family, and on to the Papal State, which retained control until the seizure of Rome in 1870. Even today, the castle, walls, and intricate network of inner alleys bear witness to its glorious medieval past.
