Arlena di Castro: A plunge into the past between nature and history

Arlena di Castro is a small village nestled in the heart of Tuscia, located in the province of Viterbo, Lazio. This fascinating location, filled with history and surrounded by nature, offers visitors a journey back in time, through centuries of history and traditions.

The historic center of Arlena di Castro is typically medieval, characterized by narrow streets and tuff houses. As you walk these streets, you will have the opportunity to admire the traditional architecture and savor the authentic and relaxed atmosphere of the village. The centerpiece of Arlena di Castro is the Piazza del Popolo, overlooked by the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. This religious building, dating from the 12th century, is known for the very important Arlena Cross, a wooden crucifix dating from the period between the 11th and 12th centuries, considered one of the oldest in central Italy.

Also contributing to the village’s charm are the remains of the medieval castle, dating back to the 11th century, which stood to protect the village. Although little remains of this castle today, its walls offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, dominated by the forests and hills of Tuscia.

Arlena di Castro is, in fact, immersed in a natural setting of rare beauty. The area surrounding the village is part of the Upper Selva di Cervara Regional Nature Park, a protected area covering thousands of hectares, characterized by lush vegetation of oak, chestnut and elm trees. This park, ideal for trekkers and birdwatchers, is home to a wealth of wildlife, including the rare and protected black woodpecker.

Another unmissable stop near Arlena di Castro is the Lamone Nature Reserve. This extraordinarily beautiful place represents one of the few remaining examples of lowland forest. The Reserve is crossed by the Olpeta River, whose waters feed a small lake called “Pantano,” a place beloved by migratory birds.

Arlena is also famous for its culinary traditions. The village’s cuisine is based on local ingredients and agro-pastoral tradition. Among typical dishes, “lombrichi,” a kind of handmade spaghetti traditionally served with wild boar ragout, and “acquacotta,” a vegetable-based soup, deserve a mention.

Among local traditions, particularly heartfelt is the Feast of St. John the Baptist, which takes place in June. During the festival, the village comes alive with processions, musical and gastronomic events, where residents and visitors mingle in an atmosphere of celebration and sharing.

In conclusion, Arlena di Castro is a place where history, traditions and natural beauty come together in perfect harmony. Whether you are a lover of history, nature or good food, this charming village will offer a visit full of discoveries and emotions. Its peaceful atmosphere and slow pace make it an ideal destination for a day trip or short vacation away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
