Town Hall

The last and most beautiful tuff building of the trinity that makes up Piazza Pretorio in Sovana.

The only difference between this and the Palazzo Pretorio and the Loggia del Capitano is that this was also the municipal seat in the 12th century.

Unfortunately the original building was destroyed in 1433 by the invading troops from Pitigliano. Let’s just say that they were not particularly happy when Sovana’s men killed their ruler, Count Orsini.

During the siege the structure suffered serious damage. When it was rebuilt, the designers added the clock, followed in the 17th century by a bell tower.

With the change of power that also took place in this period, the municipal seat was moved and the building became the municipal archive, for this reason it is also often called Palazzo dell’Archivio.

Today the entire facade is covered with splendidly colored tuff. On the first and second floors there are decorated windows surrounded by beautifully carved wooden frames.

As far as I know, this building is still the municipal archive and is therefore closed to the public. But there’s still a lot to see on the outside.

The watch is particularly beautiful because it is one of the few remaining working watches from this period in the area.
