The Pirate Wall
3250 meters of climb with gradients reaching 22%, this is the Pirate Wall, an entire road, from Saturnia to Poggio Murella, dedicated to Italy’s most beloved champion, Marco Pantani.
Marco in fact loved this part of Tuscany, and had chosen it as a place to relax and train.
It was in Poggio that Murella spent a long period of rehabilitation after an accident. He fell so in love with these places and in particular with this small Maremma village, that he decided to buy a house there.
The “Pirate Wall” was inaugurated on 9 September 2020, on the occasion of the passage of the 3rd stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico (won by the Canadian Michael Woods).
This is the first road in Italy with special signs for cyclists.
