Baths Milkve

Particular tubs dug into the rock and used by the Jewish community of Pitigliano to purify themselves, are said to have been built in the 16th century.

I’m not sure exactly why they are hidden in an underground section of the ghetto, but I think it adds to their mystique and allure.

The baths were divided into female and male ones, with a large wall in between, and were usually opened during periods of religious festivals and fasting periods.

Originally there were small windows in the tuff to let in light, but most of these were boarded up when the baths were closed in the 19th century.
