Fountain in Piazza Garibaldi

Designed by local architect Rosignoli, this stone fountain was built in 1913 and is a picture of the late Art Nouveau style, known to the rest of the world as Art Nouveau.

The round basin is crowned with aggressive-looking stone dolphins and was commissioned to celebrate the completion of the Fiora Aqueduct, which finally brought running water to Manciano.

Last time I checked, the fountain was home to a family of glittering goldfish. They live at the bottom of the reservoir and are often fed by enthusiastic children, who purchase fish food especially for the occasion.

The top tier is carved with almost pagan designs reminiscent of the Roman Empire. Manciano was never part of the empire, but the Romans colonized nearby Saturnia and Aldi was obviously inspired by their artistic style.

Once you’re done admiring the fountain, stroll through the adjacent park.

It’s a nice place to sit and watch the locals go about their business in the city centre. It is also a great place to admire the incredible panoramas of the surrounding area and, on fine days, of the sea!

In the park there is also a statue among the local and foreign trees (keep an eye out for the very strange looking palm trees). Rosignoli sculpted a
