Poggio Buco

9km from Pitigliano, on the road to Manciano, Poggio Buco was part of an ancient Etruscan settlement known as Statonia or Bomarzo, historians are not 100% sure which.

In any case, they know that most of the settlement was built in the 7th century BC, but archaeologists have found some tombs that even date back to the prehistoric Eneolithic period.

A little beyond the city remains the suggestive necropolis of Poggio Buco and the remains of a 3 km long wall that once protected the settlement from the wild countryside.

To tell the truth, there are few examples of Maremma’s Etruscan past like Poggio Buco. Hidden in the undergrowth of the Tuscan countryside, this necropolis is truly an incredible historical treasure that must be seen to be believed.

You can visit Poggio Buco and wander among the remains of the Etruscan city almost at any time of the year. It is located in an area known as Le Sparne, Poggio Buco, just outside Pitigliano, but it is quite difficult to find.
