ORIGINS AND HISTORY

Porano has Etruscan origins, as shown by the findings of the Golini and Hescanas tombs. The built-up area arose around the 13th century, in medieval times, and due to its strategic location, experienced strong urban development. It was a fief of the Avveduti, an Orvietan family, and in later centuries was the scene of bitter clashes. After the passage of Ladislaus of Anjou, King of Naples, it remained under the jurisdiction of Orvieto and, between the 16th and 17th centuries, became part of the Papal States until the unification of the Kingdom of Italy.
