ORIGINS AND HISTORY
Orvieto’s origins date back to Etruscan times, when it was known as Velzna. The city has experienced several historical eras, some of them as a major player, particularly in Etruscan and medieval times. The name “Orvieto” comes from the Latin “urbs vetus,” meaning “old city,” a clear reference to its long history. The city has seen the passage of the Etruscans, Romans, Crusades, Renaissance, and Risorgimento and played a role in World War II.

HOW TO GET
Orvieto is easily reached by car, train or bus. The city is well connected to major Italian cities due to its location along the A1 highway. Orvieto train station offers direct connections to Rome, Florence and other major cities. Once there, you can use the funicular to reach the historic center located at the top of the hill. The city also offers numerous parking lots, both free and paid, for those arriving by car.
