Celleno: A Journey Through History, Culture and Traditions

In the heart of the Lazio region, Celleno emerges as a fascinating village, rich in history and traditions, offering visitors a unique experience of art, culture and nature.

Origins and History

Celleno, located in the heart of the Teverina, rises 341 meters above sea level between Lake Bolsena and Lake Alviano. The village stands on a tuffaceous outcrop, formed over millennia, at the basins of Fosso delle Briglie and Fosso Calenne. This geographical location makes it a privileged place, framed by a pleasant rural landscape and located in one of the richest areas from a historical and archaeological point of view in Latium.

Celleno’s history is deeply linked to that of Celleno Antica, a ghost town that is now the major tourist attraction in the area. Because of the many earthquakes that struck the ancient settlement, the inhabitants were forced to move to a safer place a short distance from the old village. Thus it was that, thanks to the intervention of Hon. Luigi Razza and the municipal administrators of the time, Celleno Nuovo was born in the locality of Le Poggette. New buildings were constructed here, including the town hall, parish church, schools, kindergarten, outpatient clinic, police station, and post office.

Attractions and Monuments

Despite its recent construction, Celleno Nuovo retains several attractions of historical and cultural interest. The Church of San Donato, built in the 1930s, is the religious heart of the village. However, it is the 1610 Convent and the Church of San Rocco, located at the entrance to the old village, that attract visitors’ attention. The latter, in particular, houses a valuable wooden crucifix, carved between the 15th and 16th centuries, which is honored every year during the Feast of the Holy Crucifix, celebrated between September 12 and 16.

In the valley below the village is “La Chiesola,” a small church dedicated to Santa Maria del Soccorso, dating back to the early 16th century.

Traditions and Culture

Celleno jealously preserves its traditions and culture. One of the most anticipated events is the “Cherry Festival,” which takes place on the second Sunday in June. During this festival, citizens compete in building floats, while visitors have the opportunity to taste delicious local cherries, famous for their delicious flavor.

What to see around Celleno

In addition to the beauty of Celleno, the surrounding area offers other must-see attractions. The ancient town of Celleno, with its winding streets, old houses and churches, is a plunge into the past and offers visitors a unique experience. A short distance from the village is Civita di Bagnoregio, one of Italy’s most fascinating locations, while to the west, the magnificent Lake Bolsena and the village of Bolsena offer breathtaking views and recreational opportunities.

Conclusion

Celleno, with its thousand-year history, traditions and natural beauty, represents one of Lazio’s hidden gems. A visit to this fascinating village offers a unique experience, a journey through time among ancient Etruscan civilizations, medieval architectural beauty and traditions that still live on in the hearts of its inhabitants.
