Montepò Castle
7km from Scansano.
Property of the Biondi Santi family, wine producers, this castle inspired the English writer Graham Greene. The castle is a wonderful example of Renaissance fortification.
In the 14th century the castle belonged to the Counts of Cotton, a noble family who owned much of the surrounding countryside. In the 15th century the fortress passed to the Sienese who worked on its important restoration, effectively making this building one of the most beautiful country castles in the whole of the Tuscan Maremma.
The castle was built around a large internal courtyard and has four large towers. Being private property, the castle cannot be visited inside, but you can admire its beautiful external structure, imposing and surrounded by the beautiful Tuscan countryside, vineyards and olive groves.
