Church of Our Lady
The Church of Our Lady of Scarlino was built in 1759 over a pre-existing 13th-century church. Of course, it was renovated again in the 19th and 20th centuries, but much of its 18th-century beauty remained intact.
The true splendor of this church is in its exterior. The gabled facade is picturesque, and the red-dotted bricks are the stuff of movies. You could easily imagine this church surrounded by the Swiss Alps, kind nuns and children singing.
The picturesque bell tower does more than just add to the look. It is also the oldest part of the church, dating back to 1340.
The interior of the church is not grand, but it is far from ugly. The single nave is surmounted by two altars. On the left is a 19th-century image of the Madonna and Child surrounded by some beautifully colored angels. The 16th-century fresco depicts the Madonna and Child, but this time she is surrounded by Saints Michael and Andrew the Apostle.
