Church of San Donato

Originally built in the 11th century, the Church of San Donato has been renovated many times; it is a mix of Gothic, Romanesque and more modern styles that were popular in
Scarlino
in their respective periods.

Unlike the
St. Martin’s Church
, the exterior of this church will not leave you speechless, but its interior will.

Inside, the church retains its original Latin cross plan and is full of Romanesque charm.

A tablet depicting an anguished Christ crucified between St. Roch and St. Jerome is, in my opinion, the most beautiful work in this church. Its vibrant colors have survived the centuries in all their exquisite splendor.

If you have a taste for the macabre, you can also visit the crypt at the front of the church. There are the graves of Vanni and Emanuele Appiani, sons of Jacob III, who both died in 1471.
