CALA VIOLIN
Cala Violina the most beautiful beach in the Maremma
Cala Violina is located halfway between Punta Ala and Follonica and is undoubtedly the best known beach in the Tuscan Maremma.
Cala Violina, located between Punta Ala and Follonica, is one of the most beautiful and well-known beaches in the Tuscan Maremma. This wonderful natural oasis is famous for its sand composed of quartz grains which, when rubbed together, emit a sound similar to that of violin strings. This particularity, combined with the beauty of its sea and its position immersed in an uncontaminated natural area, makes it a unique and fascinating destination.
Cala Violina is included in the Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve.
Cala Violina Beach
Cala Violina beach is surrounded by lush Mediterranean scrub and bathed by the turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian coast. Access to the beach is only possible on foot via a short path or by sea. The beach is part of the Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve, a protected area of approximately 9000 hectares which extends through the municipalities of Gavorrano, Castiglione della Pescaia, Follonica and Scarlino.
The sand of Cala Violina is very rare and particular: when walked on, it emits a sound reminiscent of a violin. This phenomenon is very rare and determined by particular qualities of the sand, which must be neither too smooth nor too rough. This amazing distinction is shared with only a very few beaches around the world, including Australia’s Gold Coast, England’s Eigg Island, Brazil’s Babadejuka, and Madagascar’s Fort Dauphin.
The waters of Cala Violina are extraordinarily clear and calm, ideal for snorkelling lovers. The bay is surrounded by a large pine forest that protects it, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and peace. During the summer, you can find a small kiosk where you can buy sandwiches and drinks.
Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve
In addition to Cala Violina, the Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve also offers other beautiful beaches such as Cala Martina and Cala Civette, which are accessible on foot or by bicycle through the paths of the Costiere area. These lesser-known but equally alluring beaches offer an alternative to Cala Violina and are ideal for those looking for a quieter, less crowded experience.
The Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve is a place of great naturalistic and landscape interest. Its paths offer the possibility of hiking or mountain biking, discovering the beauty of the flora and fauna of the Tuscan Maremma. The reserve is also a place of great historical interest, with numerous archaeological finds that testify to the presence of commercial activities in Roman times.
