Cala Civette
Located within the Scarlino Nature Reserve, about 20 km from Castiglione della Pescaia, Cala Civette is one of the most beautiful beaches on the Tuscan coast.
The beach takes its name from the sixteenth-century tower, Torre Civette, which dominates the beach from the promontory.
The beach
Cala Civette is a small paradise in the Tuscan Maremma, an oasis where immersion in nature is total. Its turquoise, clear and crystalline waters, the gold-colored sand and the lush green of the Mediterranean scrub all around, make it one of the most beautiful beaches in Maremma and Tuscany.
Wild and unspoiled, this beach is the ideal place for those who love total immersion in nature and the marine environment. The pine forest that protects the beach is part of the nature reserve and is also a source of shade in many places during the hottest hours of the day.
The seabed in Cala Civette is sandy, for about 50 meters of shallow depth, and is very rich in fish. This is why Cala Civette is the ideal beach for snorkelling lovers, who here can see the main fish species typical of the Tuscan Maremma.
The beach is not equipped with services, sunbeds, umbrellas and there are no establishments.
Cala Civette Tower
On the promontory overlooking the beach, the white Torre Civette stands out, a sixteenth-century tower located near the homonymous farm.
The tower is immersed in the lush Mediterranean scrub, has a quadrangular section and is built on several levels. The construction of the tower dates back to the 16th century, on a pre-existing fortification of medieval origin. The tower served as a watchtower for the principality of Piombino.
The sixteenth-century appearance of the tower was modified during the eighteenth century and in the first half of the 1900s due to some interventions and renovations.
Today the tower and the farm of Cala Civette are privately owned.
How to reach Cala Civette
In auto :
The beach is easily reached by following the signs for Puntone di Scarlino and continuing on the Provincial Road 158 in the direction of Pian d’Alma. Once you arrive in Pian d’Alma, continue for about 4 km following the Torre Civette local road, until you reach the free car park where you can leave your car. From the parking lot, the beach is only 100 meters away on foot, just cross the Alma stream (no danger, it’s a small stream).
By bike :
If you are fond of mountain bike excursions, you can reach the beach of Cala Civette following a beautiful path immersed in the Maremma nature. The departure is from Puntone di Scarlino, continue towards the Etrusca Marina tourist port, pass the Parco delle Cale hotel and continue along a dirt road until you reach a clearing from which a dirt road starts. The path crosses the gentle hills and offers a breathtaking view of the sea, passing through Cala Martina, Cala Francese, Cala Violina and finally Cala Civette.
