St. James Church

The Church of St. James is located just outside Montieri on Provincial Road 11 Pavone.

Tucked behind a long expanse of oak trees, this ancient Romanesque church was built during the 13th century. Its dilapidated stone facade betrays its age, and while the exterior is extremely humble, the interior is decorated with painted panels depicting religious figures in an earthy, eye-catching style.

It was restored in the 17th century by the first marquis of Montieri, Biagio Capizzucchi.

Note the beautiful baptismal font taken from the former Romanesque church, St. Paul’s Church, and the small room on the left where Blessed Giacomo Papocchi lived in the second half of the 13th century.
