Montieri Archeo-mineral Park

This is Montieri‘s entry point into the Grosseto Metalliferous Hills National Archaeological Technology Park.

Like the gateway to Gavorrano, this part of the park encompasses all the features that make the area so beautiful.

In an effort to preserve the mining and metallurgical history that once dominated this area, Montieri has joined forces with various archaeologists and natural historians to create a series of hiking and biking trails throughout the park that can be enjoyed by tourists year-round.

The park itself is spectacular. The otherwise quiet countryside is accentuated every couple of meters by high rocky cliffs. You almost feel like you are on the moon!

Scattered around the park is a collection of open pit mines. These can be visited on guided tours-check with the visitor center for information.

This park will probably appeal most to those who love all things underground, and believe me, these people exist-my husband has been to every underground mine in the area!

The countryside is also quite beautiful, and park curators have worked very hard to make sure the area is not just a bunch of empty mines. There is always some exhibition, whether it is a photo exhibition of past mining activities or a demonstration of local mining culture.
