Shrine of the Ash Tree
Although not technically in Monterotondo Marittimo, this church is located in nearby Frassine and is too beautiful not to mention.
It is considered one of the most important shrines in Maremma and was finished during the 15th century. The shrine is linked to Fraxinus excelsior, a tree revered by the ancient Norse that was burned in the Maremma countryside to ward off evil spirits.
The Ash Shrine houses many beautiful paintings and relics, not to mention the fact that it is surrounded by picturesque scenery, perfect for an afternoon stroll–but that is not what attracts visitors to this church.

Every year, pilgrims come to the Ash Tree Shrine to catch a glimpse of a statue of the Virgin Mary called The Virgin and Child (pictured below).
Legend has it that the statue was found one day by a farmer who followed his ox into the woods. The farmer found his ox kneeling in front of an ash tree where the monks had hidden the statue of Our Lady. After hearing the legend, local followers in the 15th century decided that Our Lady had chosen this place as her throne of mercy and therefore built a church in her name.
