Organ Museum

A small museum located on the top floor of the Church and Church and Convent of San Pietro all’Orto in Massa Marittima.

You might think it’s strange to have a museum that displays only ancient organs, but these collectors have made it their life’s work to find and exhibit some of the rarest and most beautiful organs ever made in Italy. It is the only museum of its kind in the world.

Italian organ makers were considered among the best in Europe and the stars of this small museum are certainly the rare portative organ from 1686, the two 17th century organs from Emilia and central Italy and the splendid example of a 17th century Neapolitan organ. century.

The museum also documents the evolution of organ technology, style and taste. It details the history of what was once the quintessential symbol of Western musical culture with beautifully painted pianos, harpsichords and other musical instruments from the 16th century through the 20th century.

The recently restored church in which this museum is housed is also worth a visit, even just to see the magnificent stained glass windows and fragments of frescoes attributed to Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
