Candlestick Tower and the Sienese Fortress

When
Massa Marittima
became part of the Republic of Siena, the Sienese expanded the city’s boundaries beyond the medieval fortress built by the Pisans. The Candlestick Tower and the Sienese Fortress are part of this newer part of the city.

Immediately after leaving
Garibaldi Square
, you will notice a side road going up a very steep hill. At the end of this hill is a wall and an archway. If you can climb this hill, and I can tell you that in the summer it is painful to say the least, you will have entered the Sienese part of the city.

The Candlestick Tower was built for the Massetani in 1228 after becoming a free state. I guess you could call it a kind of gift to themselves, an outward symbol of their independence.

Unfortunately, the Sienese completely destroyed the tower when they took over in 1335. The building was rebuilt lower than the original design and connected to the Sienese Fortress, which was added after the Sienese occupation in an attempt to control rebellious citizens.

Today both the tower and the fortress are open to visitors.

The tower was transformed into a bell tower in the 15th century, when the first clock was added. This clock was replaced in 1760. After purchasing your ticket, you can climb the stairs up to the tower and admire the original clock mechanisms.

Upon reaching the top of the tower, it is possible to step out onto the bridge and overlook Massa Marittima. On fine days it is possible to see as far as Elba Island where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled.

The view from up here is truly spectacular. You can almost imagine what it was like to be the rulers of Siena. Stand on this bridge and admire your kingdom and keep your eyes open for any problems.

From up here you can see all the streets and avenues of the city. You can watch Massetans go about their business and tourists fill the square like multicolored ants. It is a liberating feeling and definitely worth the small registration fee, just be prepared for an arduous climb to the top!
