Gavorrano’s wall
The walls of Gavorrano were built during the 13th century, when control of the city center was divided between the bishops of the new Diocese of Grosseto and the Alberti family of Mangona.
During the 14th century the defensive structure was restored by the Sienese and reinforced with several watchtowers. Sadly much of their hard work was wasted, as the walls and its towers were abandoned as soon as the Sienese left Gavorrano. It was only in the second half of the last century that the city began restoration work on the city walls to bring it back to its ancient splendor. Some of the original 13th-14th century towers still remain. Visitors can enter Gavorrano through one of the original arched gates, the Porta di Sotto, which is quite nostalgic I must say!
