Gavorrano Mining-Natural Park
The Mining-Natural Park was opened to preserve the mining territory of Gavorrano and its history for generations of local inhabitants.
It is the largest “gateway” to the National Technological Archaeological Park of the Colline Metallifere Grossetane and consists of over 100 km of closed mines in and around the Colline Metallifere, most of which contained deposits of pyrite (iron sulphide).
The park’s main attraction is its museum, which features a display of tools used by miners, as well as memorabilia, reproductions and documents relating to the local mining industry and mineral extraction during the 19th and 20th centuries. Part of the museum has been converted into a miniature mine so visitors can get an insight into a day in the life of a miner.
The park also houses a 2,000-seat natural amphitheater, created at the foot of the San Rocco cave. This theater symbolizes the park’s transition from an open pit mine to a cultural, social, environmental and tourist attraction and hosts a variety of events and performances throughout the year.
