Capodimonte

Discovering Capodimonte, an ancient Vulsian village

Capodimonte is a small and charming village located on the southern shores of Lake Bolsena. Although it is one of the smallest villages overlooking the lake, it is certainly one of the most distinctive, thanks to its unique location on a promontory that extends toward the lake. This prime location offers visitors splendid views of the largest body of water in Latium.

The Village and its History

Walking through the alleys of Capodimonte, one can admire fascinating views of the lake. The village, located 334 meters above sea level, is about 12 km from Montefiascone and 28 km from Bolsena. Due to its proximity to the lake, the climate in Capodimonte is mild, making it an ideal place to spend a day of history, art and nature.

Farnese Fortress

The most impressive monument in Capodimonte is undoubtedly the Rocca Farnese. This fortress, originally built in the 11th century as a prison for heretics, was transformed into a stately home in 1510 at the behest of the Farnese family. Antonio da Sangallo the Younger was commissioned to renovate the fortress, adapting it to the needs of Alessandro Farnese, who later became Pope Paul III.

Collegiate Church of St. Mary of the Assumption

A short distance from Rocca Farnese is the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta. This church houses stuccoes attributed to Vignola and an 18th-century painting of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The historic center of Capodimonte also offers other places of interest such as the Borghese Palace, current municipal headquarters, and the Poniatowski Palace, also known as the “Palazzaccio.” For fans of history and culture, the Inland Water Navigation Museum, located just minutes from the historic center, is a must-see.

Bisentina Island and Martana Island

For those wishing to explore the natural beauty of Lake Bolsena, a visit to Bisentina Island is a must. This island, the larger of the two in the lake, is surrounded by ancient Etruscan legends. In fact, the island is said to hide the entrance to the mythical underground kingdom of Agarthi. Martana Island, on the other hand, is smaller and is located opposite the town of Marta. Although it is not possible to visit it, as it is private property, it is possible to circumnavigate it by boat from the ports of Capodimonte or Bolsena.

Conclusions

Capodimonte is a village rich in history and charm. Its prime location on Lake Bolsena, its historical monuments such as the Rocca Farnese and the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, and its surrounding islands make it a must-see destination for those visiting Lazio. Whether you are passionate about history, art or nature, Capodimonte has something to offer everyone.
