The Tuscan Maremma has an incredible wealth of archaeological sites. The first settlements in the Maremma area date back to the Bronze Age. The Manciano museum is the only one in all of Italy to have a collection of artifacts ranging from prehistory to the Roman Empire. In the years following the Second World War, many archaeological sites were robbed of their treasures, with a serious loss of ancient finds. Fortunately, however, the Maremma is so extraordinarily rich in archaeological areas that the archaeological heritage is still priceless today, and its museums host collections of rare beauty and great historical value.
