Guzman powder magazine
The Guzman Powder Magazine was, as its rather exotic name suggests, built by the Spanish in 1692.
The building was used to house the tons of explosives needed for the mill and industrial works which supported Orbetello's economy for much of this period.
In 1860 Giuseppe Garibaldi, the man who unified Italy and is considered a god in Maremma, landed in Orbetello and filled his powder magazine with ammunition from the Polveriera. Eleven Orbetellans volunteered to follow him in his quest to make Italy one.
Today, this ancient and venerable building houses the Orbetello Archaeological Museum.
Inside the museum there is a large exhibition of military artefacts, weapons and tools, as well as a collection of Etruscan and Roman artefacts recovered from nearby archaeological sites including the famous Talamone Pediment.
