The beach
Giannella is one of the two tomboli that connect the promontory of Monte Argentario to the mainland, the other is that of Feniglia. It is a long strip of land of about 6km that runs from the Argentario to the mouth of the Albegna river, near the town of Albinia. Giannella beach is particularly suitable for families with small children as the seabed slopes down very slowly and is shallow for several metres, with frequent shoals. Giannella is also much loved by windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts. Behind the beach, a large pine forest.
A bit of history…
This area has been inhabited since Roman times, as evidenced by some archaeological finds, such as ceramics, vases, black glazed, sealed and Byzantine ceramics, and the remains of two ancient Roman villas, found at the Barabino farm, where remains of amphorae, cocciopesto and brick floors have been discovered. A first important settlement existed during the Spanish domination, in the 1500s, but the real growth of this rural area occurred only from the 18th century. In the 20th century, Giannella became one of the first and most important tourist destinations in the Tuscan Maremma.
What see
In addition to its beautiful sea, Giannella is also famous for its historic buildings, first of all the Casale della Giannella, born as a coastal tower in the second half of the 1500s, part of the defensive system of the Spanish Presidia state. Since 1989 the farmhouse has hosted the “Aurelio Peccei” Environmental Education Center and constitutes the access to the WWF asy. From the farmhouse you can also reach the “Butterfly Garden”.
