Cove of the Dead Sea

It is one of the wildest and most barren coves of the Argentario, completely made up of rocks and large pebbles. It is mainly a free area and you have to go there equipped with everything. There is only a small refreshment point near the parking lot. So it is prudent to stock up on water if you want to spend the whole day with it.

Its name is due to the fact that being protected by the Red Island and by a row of rocks right in front of it, the sea in this point is always calm.
Thanks to the rock barrier, natural pools have been created in which it is a pleasure to dive and explore the bay with a mask and snorkel. The seabed in this area is very populated with fish and marine plants, and this makes the discovery of this stretch of sea a wonderful experience. But staying immersed in the pools to get a tan is also very pleasant. Staying in the water is the only possibility of coolness, given that the vegetation in this point is almost non-existent. It’s good to bring an umbrella,
but keep in mind that you will have to spread the sponge on the rocks. A very small strip of beach offers paid sunbeds and umbrellas. The managers also rent canoes and kayaks for those wishing to explore the coast.

Getting to the Dead Sea is not very easy. You can reach it by land via a path that starts from the panoramic road. Although the cove is only about ten kilometers from Porto Ercole, there are no passable roads that connect it with the village. The simplest way to get there is to pass through the center of Porto Santo Stefano and from there take the panoramic road to Poggio Fondoni, in the Rocchette area. Following this itinerary you will be able to admire one of the most beautiful panoramas in the area. Alternatively you can follow via del Campone, on which the panoramic road reconnects. The path that leads to the sea starts in the locality ‘Le Scorpacciate’. The access is located next to the entrance to a villa which is recognizable by a sign depicting a sun.
Following this itinerary you will arrive directly at the first cove. It’s not difficult to do, but on the way back the steps at the top, if walked in the sun, can create some difficulties for those who are not very trained. The secret is to tackle the ascent calmly and the route will be more accessible. Perhaps having children or elderly people with you, carefully evaluate their agility and physical fitness before venturing.

To reach the largest inlet, from the point where the path ends, there are still about fifty meters. Better to bring rock sandals to move easily on the stones.

In the middle of the bay flows a spring of water rich in iron and minerals. Don’t count on that to quench your thirst. Bring plenty of drinking water with you.
