Bosco Rocconi
On Monte Amiata, in the municipal territories of Semproniano and Roccalbegna, Bosco Rocconi is one of the most important WWF reserves in Tuscany.
The landscape is suggestive, with steep rocky walls, deep gorges, dense woods and ancient trees, two streams cross the protected reserve, the main one, the Albegna river, and the Rigo stream.
The highest elevations reach 500m.
WWF Oasis Bosco Rocconi
The nature reserve covers a total area of 371 hectares, of which 130 hectares are under the WWF oasis.
Flora :
The vegetation of the nature reserve is mainly wooded, with native species of these territories of lower Tuscany. Mainly there are holm oaks, minor maple, phillyrea, hackberry, lentisk, manna ash, rowan, dogwood, downy oak and goat cheese. In the more humid areas there are poplars, hazelnuts, elms and black and white hornbeams. It is interesting to note the presence of 28 species of orchids, especially Bertolini’s Ophrys, aquatic orchid and wood flower.
Fauna:
The WWF oasis of Bosco Rocconi is inhabited by many animal species, some of community interest, as in the case of the crested newt, the yellow-bellied toad, the red deer and the spectacled salamander. Among the mammals, badgers, wild cats, martens and wolves are widespread. There are many birds that nest in the protected area, the main ones being the peregrine falcon, the lanner falcon and the harrier, but also the blue rock thrush, wallcreeper, common raven, bee-eater, roller, dipper and bee-eater. As for reptiles, however, turtles, vipers, grass snakes and snakes. Furthermore, the caves of Bosco Rocconi are the natural habitat of a particular butterfly, the Polyxena, and of an endemic cricket of these areas, the Etruscan Dolichopoda laetitiae.
The visit is possible by reservation, the route is approximately 3-4 hours and 6 km long, not very demanding, to be done on foot, by bike or on horseback.
