Already inhabited in the Bronze Age, it was a lively port during the Roman Empire. When the Romans left, Giannutri was abandoned and used by pirates as an outpost to attack Tuscany.
In the 16th century the Spanish planned to build settlements on the island, but the plan never came to fruition. Today Giannutri is a protected natural park and is the paradise of thousands of rare animal and plant species. The stretches of incredible beaches and dense tall forests are interrupted only by Roman ruins. Carefully preserved, the 1st century BC villa. C. located in Cala Maestra, it was built by the senatorial family of Lucio Domizio Enobarbo, relative of the emperor Nero. The columns of an ancient Roman port are also visible on the sea. Public baths, cisterns and other ruins from the Roman era are scattered throughout the rest of the island.

What to see on Giannutri Island
Giannutri offers many attractions for visitors. One of the main ones is its untouched nature, with its unique flora and fauna. The island is also famous for its two small pebble beaches, Cala Maestra and Cala Spalmatoio, which are the only two landing points on the island. These beaches are ideal for swimming and snorkelling, thanks to their crystal clear water and their seabed rich in marine life.
The Roman Villa of Giannutri
One of the main points of historical interest on the island is the Roman Villa, located in Cala Maestra. This ancient villa, built in the first half of the 2nd century AD. by the Roman imperial family of the Domizi Enobarbi, it covered an area of about 5 hectares of land and had an enormous terrace accessible directly from the sea via a staircase. The excavations carried out brought to light the remains of floors decorated with delicately crafted marble and a splendid mosaic of the myth of the labyrinth.

How to get to the island of Giannutri – Ferries
Giannutri is a protected park, so you can’t reach it on your own. Maregiglio operates a ferry service from Porto Santo Stefano every day between 22 June and September and once a week (usually Sunday) during the rest of the year.
