archaeological Museum

Inaugurated in 2001, the Archaeological Museum of Scansano celebrates the history of man in the Fiora and Albegna Valleys, starting from prehistory up to the Etruscans and the era of the Roman Empire.

Most of the ex votos, statues, ceramics and other Etruscan objects exhibited in the first two rooms come from the nearby settlement of Ghiacco Forte and are the result of over 30 years of archaeological excavations.

The museum then moves to the Bronze Age and the Roman Empire, where you can see images and reconstructions of the incredible Roman villa of Aia Nuova.

The villa itself cannot be visited because it is privately owned, but the museum preserves an impressive realistic model of the building, complete with images of the different rooms and bedrooms, original Roman majolica floors and murals, as well as photos of l ancient sauna.
