Parish church of Santa Cristina

Whenever I include a monument that is not technically in the town I am writing about-this time it is Semproniano-I feel a little guilty, but I honestly could not pass up the opportunity to mention this beautiful Romanesque church, even though it is in nearby Rocchette di Fazio.

The Pieve di Santa Cristina belonged to the Templar Order during the Middle Ages and until their dissolution in the 17th century.

Obviously ignored by the Catholic Church, the building was left in tatters and was finally divided and sold privately in the 19th century.

But that did not reduce the mystique of the building, nor did it prevent tourists from visiting it, I might add. According to legend, the crypt of the church holds the remains of a very important Templar knight, his horse and sword. Locals are also convinced that his vast treasure is buried somewhere in the surrounding countryside.

But legends aside, this building is very beautiful to look at. Soft gray steps lead directly to the front door. Above the portal, on a round arch, a Templar cross is clearly visible. There is also a distinctive Templar rose at the top of the facade.
