Museum of the Mercury Mines of Monte Amiata

Occupying the entire ground floor of Palazzo Sforza-Cesarini, this museum exhibits everything that has to do with the history and mining tradition that shaped Monte Amiata between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with particular attention to the territory between Santa Fiora and Castell’Azzara.

The museum recreates mercury research and extraction techniques, starting from the oldest to the most modern. It also has a large collection of tools and equipment used by local miners, as well as a reconstruction of the underground shafts.
Among the other mining memorabilia on display are old documents and photos that trace the passionate strikes held by workers over the centuries in the hope of improving their working conditions.
