Oratory of Our Lady of the Snows
Not to be confused with the Oratory of the Madonna of the Snow in Santa Fiora, this church was built in the late 15th century, but the present facade and crowning arches were added in the 20th century.
Compared to the others in
Cinigiano
, this church is small, has only one nave, and is rather sparsely decorated; only bright fragments remain of most of its once wonderfully colored frescoes.
But the Oratory of Our Lady of the Snows has its own understated charm that is hard to match.
It stands out on the corner of a busy street, although its facade is a rather drab cream color with brown stone embellishments.
And inside you can hardly be disappointed. Especially if you are a stained glass lover. Those in this church depict Saints John the Baptist, Leonard, William and Francis of Assisi.
There is also a characteristic 19th-century panel of the “Madonna and Child between St. John and St. Joseph” that is definitely worth admiring
.
So you see, never judge a book by its cover!
