Paths

Castell'Azzara has four walking/hiking trails that wind through mountain ranges and forests just outside the city limits.

The four trails cross rivers and waterfalls, sparse scrubland and dense forests. You will also find the odd spring or two-a great place to rest tired feet!

But the biggest attractions of the area are the sinkholes: shallow holes and ominous caverns hidden in the lush forest surrounding the town.

The most famous cave is known simply as "The Cave of Sassocolato." If you are not afraid of the more than 2,000 bats, you can explore this beautiful national treasure and its large and exquisite limestone stalagmites and stalactites.

Guided tours are run in English by L'Orso Speleological Group (Apr 10-Nov 10 or by request; +39 0564 951032).

You can also visit other bat-filled caves in Castell Azzara if you like such things! All are clearly marked and easy to access as long as you keep to the trail.
