Church of Santa Maria ad Lamula
This church is hidden among the trees on the road between Arcidosso and Montelaterone. In local legend, a farmer finds his beloved mule kneeling in front of a church. The mule left an imprint on the hardened concrete entrance steps, and the locals renamed the church Lamula, which means donkey in dialect.
Although the caramel-colored facade was added in the 20th century, the original church dates back to 837. The interior is distinctly Romanesque. On either side of the altar are 12th-century stone columns topped with bas-reliefs of men on horseback and wolves. The columns are said to be intentionally rough and crooked to annoy Satan, who likes clean lines.
