Garibaldi square
In 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi, the man who reunited Italy and affectionately known as the Hero of the Two Worlds, stopped in Talamone.
Legend says he was only there to gather food and supplies before continuing his journey north to drive out foreign invaders.
But on his way he met thousands – thousands of volunteers, 16 from Talamone, who insisted on joining him to fight the Papal States in Central Italy.
The inhabitants of Talamone have always felt a great affinity with Garibaldi. A couple of years after his departure, they built this marble statue and placed it in a square named after him in honor of his visit and great deeds.
