A short distance from Viterbo, the historic center of Vitorchiano is distinguished by its dwellings that seem to merge with the volcanic rock outcrop on which they stand, earning it the nickname “Suspended Village.” The surrounding nature, characterized by forests of oak, ash, beech, elm and chestnut trees, offers breathtaking views, particularly from the cliff overlooking the Vezza Valley.

ORIGINS AND HISTORY

Vitorchiano’s origins date back to Etruscan times, but it was in the Middle Ages that the village acquired its present structure. The walls surrounding the hamlet, built around 1200, are a remarkable example of medieval architecture, with square-based towers and cylindrical turrets. Porta Romana, located in the central tower, represents the only access to the medieval center. The history of Vitorchiano is closely linked to that of Rome; for almost 800 years, in fact, the village was a fief of the Eternal City, and even today it is still possible to notice numerous SPQR coats of arms scattered around the village.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS

The historic center of Vitorchiano is a maze of alleys, small arches and small squares, all characterized by the gray color of peperino. Monuments not to be missed include the Church of St. Amanzio, the Church of St. Mary of the Assumption, the House of the Podesta, and the Town Hall. The village also offers several lookouts from which to admire the Fosso Acqua Fredda gorge and the Vezza River. A special feature of Vitorchiano are the “profferli,” external stone staircases leading to balconies supported by segmental arches. A short distance from the center is the Sacred Wood or Monster Park of Bomarzo, a garden filled with statues and peperino sculptures. Finally, a curiosity: there is a replica of a Moai, a typical monolith on Easter Island, in Vitorchiano.

HOW TO GET

To reach Vitorchiano, located a few kilometers from Viterbo, you can use your car, following the road signs to Tuscia. The area is also well connected by public transportation, with buses leaving regularly from Viterbo and other neighboring cities. Once there, the village is easily explored on foot, soaking up the medieval atmosphere and enjoying the architectural and natural beauty it offers.

In conclusion, Vitorchiano is a hidden jewel of Tuscia, a village rich in history, art and nature, which deserves to be discovered and appreciated in every corner.

Vitorchiano, located in the heart of Tuscia, is a village that enchants for its architectural and landscape integrity.
