The name “Vetralla” is believed to derive from the Latin “Vetus Aula,” meaning “Ancient Place.” The town is located on the western slope of the Cimini Mountains, near Lake Vico. Its history is deeply rooted in the Viterbo countryside, surrounded by centuries-old forests where the famous porcini mushrooms are harvested. The area is also famous for its olive groves, which produce a high-quality extra virgin olive oil, celebrated every year in the Oil Festival.

Vetralla has an ancient history, having been inhabited by both the Etruscans and the Romans. Over the centuries, it suffered numerous invasions and looting, most notably between 1110 and 1134 by the Viterbese. These events led to the construction of a massive city wall to protect the city. Over time, Vetralla came under the rule of several noble families, including the Orsini, Di Vico, Anguillara, and Farnese families. These families contributed to the construction of some of the city’s most important buildings, such as the Castle. After their rule, Vetralla became a possession of the Apostolic Chamber and had a turbulent relationship with the Papal States. During the 1700s and the following century, the city saw the presence of French, Austrians, and Russians, and actively participated in the Italian Risorgimento until the taking of Rome in 1870.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS

Vetralla is nestled in the green Cimini Mountains and offers visitors a variety of attractions.
