The area was also frequented in Roman times, but the real birth of the fortified center occurred in 1477, when Giorgio della Rovere, bishop of Orvieto, decided to establish his residence here and settle his retinue from Parma. From this time, the village took the name Castel Giorgio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">The history of the village is closely linked to the castle, which has suffered destruction and remodeling over the years due to struggles between noble families and natural disasters. In 1620, Cardinal Giacomo Sannesio decided to completely renovate the palace, turning it into a luxurious summer residence for cardinals and prelates who wished to escape the heat of Orvieto. Over the centuries, Castel Giorgio has hosted illustrious historical figures and suffered the passage of Spanish troops bound for Naples in 1743.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Art, Culture and Environment<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the Sannesio Palace, Castel Giorgio boasts numerous artistic and cultural attractions. The parish church dedicated to St. Pancras Martyr, dating back to the 17th century, and the Town Hall, built in the early 20th century, are just some of the architectural gems in the village. In the surrounding area, you can discover other wonders such as the 12th-century Pecorone village, the 19th-century Montiolo palace, and several historic villas such as the Fagiolo villa and the Casa Pisana villa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Near Castel Giorgio is also Montalfina Castle, dating back to the 8th century. This fortress, built at the behest of the Lombard king Desiderius, houses a valuable collection of weapons, ancient coins and archaeological finds inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The natural landscape around Castel Giorgio is equally fascinating.
