This privileged location has favored the birth and development of the town since Etruscan times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds.

The heart of Valentano is the charming historic center, a tangle of ancient streets and squares characterized by stone and tuff buildings. Here is the Piazza della Rocca, the main square of the village, overlooked by the omnipresent Rocca Farnese. This imposing fortress, built in the 12th century and later remodeled by the Farnese family, is the symbol of Valentano. The Rocca, now converted into a museum, houses the Museo del Presepe and the Museo Civico, which preserves archaeological finds, historical and artistic evidence of Valentano and Tuscia.

Strolling through the streets of the historic center, we arrive at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. This place of worship, dating back to the 16th century, is a fine example of Renaissance religious architecture. Inside, the church holds a number of valuable works of art, most notably the “Madonna and Child” by Benvenuto di Giovanni, one of the leading exponents of the Sienese school.

The area surrounding Valentano also offers many points of interest. In particular, the area is dotted with several Etruscan necropolises, such as that of Pianezze, which represent valuable evidence of one of the most fascinating civilizations of Italy’s past.

Valentano is also famous for its food and wine traditions. Indeed, the town is renowned for the production of extra virgin olive oil, which enjoys the protected geographical indication “Tuscia.” The local cuisine, typically peasant, offers a variety of tasty and authentic dishes, such as bread and bean soup, earthworms alla valentanese, a type of handmade pasta, and porchetta, a true symbol of Latium gastronomy.

Among the popular traditions of the village, particularly heartfelt is the Feast of St. Pancras, patron saint of Valentano, which is celebrated every year on May 12. On this occasion, the streets of the historic center come alive with religious processions, cultural events, music and dance performances, and of course, tastings of local products.

Another important event is the “Porcini Mushroom Festival,” which takes place in September, and during which it is possible to taste delicious specialties made from porcini mushrooms gathered in the surrounding forests.

Valentano also has a long tradition of craftsmanship, especially in wrought iron work, as evidenced by the many craft stores that can be visited in the historic center.

Finally, a short distance from Valentano is the Lake Mezzano Nature Reserve, an oasis of peace and tranquility where it is possible to take pleasant walks by the lake, go birdwatching or simply enjoy relaxing in the midst of nature.

In conclusion, Valentano is a small jewel of Lazio that deserves to be discovered: a place where history, art, traditions and nature coexist in a harmonious blend, offering the visitor an unforgettable experience. Between a tour of the historic center, a visit to the Farnese Fortress, a stroll through the Etruscan necropolis and a tasting of typical products, Valentano offers unique and authentic emotions on a journey back in time among the beauty of Tuscia.

Valentano: among history, nature and traditions in the heart of Tuscia Nestled in a natural setting of rare beauty, in a commanding position overlooking Lake Bolsena, stands Valentano, a picturesque village in the Tuscia Viterbo area, rich in history, art and folk traditions.
