This imposing building, dating back to the 15th century, was commissioned by the Orsini family, as can be seen from an effigy on the main tower. Strolling through the streets of the village, one can admire various historical and cultural testimonies, including the Church of S. Maria Assunta, with its 18th-century façade, and the Town Hall, originally a convent transformed into a fortress by the Farnese family.

History of Montalto di Castro

Legend has it that Montalto was founded in the 5th century AD by the inhabitants of a coastal town who took refuge on the high ground to escape raids by Saracen pirates. However, the first written mention of Montalto dates back to 853 AD, in a papal bull addressed to the bishop of Tuscania, where the name “Montis Alti” appears. Over the centuries, Montalto underwent several dominations, passing from the hands of the Vico family to the Orsini family, and on to the Papal State, which retained control until the seizure of Rome in 1870. Even today, the castle, walls, and intricate network of inner alleys bear witness to its glorious medieval past.

Events and Traditions

Montalto di Castro is also the stage for numerous events and demonstrations that celebrate local culture and traditions:

Asparagus Festival: Between late May and early June, Montalto celebrates asparagus through tasty recipes, music and entertainment.

The Brigand’s Dinner: A food and wine tour held in early July, during which visitors can rediscover the history and typical products of the area.

Summer Festival: A late-August music festival filled with cabaret, concerts and food stands.

Beer Festival: In mid-August, an event dedicated to beer tasting and typical Maremma cuisine.

Maremma d’aMare: A fair of Maremma traditions in late April, with three days of entertainment, horseback riding shows, cabaret and more.

Night of the Butteri: In mid-May, an evening dedicated to the flavors of Maremma meat, enhanced by equestrian performances by the butteri.

Melon Festival: In the second half of July, Montalto celebrates the melon with food stands, dancing and performances.

Vulci Music Fest: Between late July and early August, a music festival that enlivens the area with a series of events.

Typical products

Montalto di Castro boasts a rich food and wine tradition, with typical products reflecting the fertility of its territory:

Asparagus: Grown locally, the green asparagus of Montalto di Castro is known for its unique flavor due to the characteristics of the volcanic soil.

Melon: Produced mainly in the hamlet of Pescia Romana, the melon from this area is distinguished by its sweetness, juiciness and fragrance.

Vegetables: Montalto’s fertile soil also produces beans, romaine lettuce, spinach, chard, and many other fresh and tasty vegetables.

Conclusion

Montalto di Castro is a village that perfectly combines the beauty of the coast with the historical and cultural richness of the Latium hinterland.
